MCGH Professors Sign Open Letter in Support of WHO Following US Funding Freeze

Professor Julie Bines, Professor Trevor Duke, and Professor Andrew Steer have joined 476 other signatories of World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centres in signing an open letter published in The Lancet, voicing strong support for WHO following the sudden withdrawal of US global health funding.

The letter condemns the funding freeze as a breach of core bioethical principles and human rights, raising concerns about the lack of a transition plan to maintain vital health services and programs. The signatories emphasise WHO’s critical role in global health coordination, especially in low- and middle-income countries where the impact of the funding halt is expected to be most severe.
